A Family Remembrance as told to me by Tony Sisti.
In 1959 the S.S. Vulcania with 1300 passengers on board, set sail from a port in Naples to cross the Atlantic Ocean so a young Italian family could begin a new life. This ocean voyage would not only lead to a new start in life for the family in a faraway place called Canada but would fulfill the destiny of their new born son, only two months old.
Antonio Rocco Sisti, born Feb. 18, 1959 began the earliest part of his life travelling across the ocean to a land of new opportunity with his mother, father and older sister Anna Maria. There was family fear the medical staff on board the ocean liner would be ill equipped to handle the birth of a child. The family suggested it was best for his father Ferruccio and his mother Iammcolata to delay the trip to the new world until after the birth of their son Tony. This event may have delayed the trip but in eventuality would not deter Tony R. Sisti in his lifelong effort to make the world a better place.
In Italy, Ferruccio Sisti, born in 1932, was by trade a rough carpenter and his wife Iammcolata was a seamstress. She grew up in the village of Arce in the province of Frosinone. Her husband’s roots, Fraine, Chieti. Sisti’s father’s father was a coffin maker and his wife a homemaker. His mother’s parents died when she was very young.
His parents, living and working in Rome, wanted a better life for their young family and decided there was nothing to keep them in Italy for them to stay. Indicative of the times for immigrants in the late 1950s, his family was sponsored by his mother’s uncle from Leamington, Ontario and the journey began. In retrospect his parents did not realize their desire for change would fuel the fire for their son Tony to always try to make life better for others as they did for him.
And a journey it was. It took roughly a week on the open water for the old ship, first commissioned in 1926, to cross the Atlantic to make its delivery of new Canadians to Halifax. The next leg was to hop on a train to Toronto and finally a bus ride for the family to Leamington completing the trek.
“Life was simpler then,” Sisti says, from what he remembers of his childhood. “It was normal as I knew it.” It was home-fashioned road hockey sticks and little money available for organized sports and hand ball in the school yard as the family Sisti was not as well off as their Canadian neighbours. Sisti’s parents found employment. His father’s first job was as a pinsetter at a local bowling establishment close to home. The family grew, adding another son and two daughters. He was able to return to his trade as a rough carpenter while his mother worked in the kitchen at the Ciociaro Club.
“But you really didn’t know any better,” said Sisti. “In the 1960s and 70s times were tough, times were different.” This was especially so for a young immigrant family new to Canada. He worked hard as a youth doing yard maintenance in a local vineyard on the outskirts of the Windsor city limits ……..
Please accept our deepest condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

My sincere condolences to the extended Sisti family. Compare Ferruccio will be severely missed by all who knew him. "Kind and gentle" are adjectives that describe him perfectly! I will always cherish memories of family gatherings at his and la Comara's home on Parent Ave. growing up and visits at his home in Tecumseh in more recent years. May he rest in peace.
