Obituary of Richard William Spicer "Dick"
SPICER, Richard William "Dick"
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dick on October 1, 2023 at WRH, Met. Campus, after a brief stay. at the age of 80. Loving husband of Ann (nee Verney) with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage. Cherished father of Andrew (Farah), and "Papa" to Leah and Aidan. Dear brother of Jim (Jennette). Predeceased by his parents Bill and Lenore. Dick grew up in London, Tilbury, and Windsor with his parents and young brother Jim. The early passing of his parents encouraged him to find independence at a young age, and he found work as a reporter at the Windsor Star immediately upon graduation from the University of Western Ontario. A believer in the importance of quality journalism, he focused on professionalism and the craft of writing during his 29 years there. After leaving the Star, he taught journalism for 10 years at St. Clair College. With a keen interest in science and technology since childhood, Dick was a very early adopter of computers, and enjoyed this and other hobbies, along with reading. In his role as a teacher he introduced students to the early days of internet-assisted journalism. A heartfelt thank you to the staff on the 5th floor at WRH, Met. Campus for their attentive care. At Dick's request, cremation has taken place. Memorial visitation will be held at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home (Central Chapel) 1700 Tecumseh Rd. E. (519) 253-7234 on Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday, October 6, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at 11:00 a.m. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to honour Dick may be made to the Windsor-Essex Humane Society (1375 Provincial Rd., Windsor, ON N8W-5V8).
