Obituary of Dimitar Sofianov

Dimitar “Jimmy” Sofianov

September 29, 1932 - February 1, 2021

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Jimmy, after a lengthy and courageous battle due to complications from a stroke suffered in March 2019. Jimmy was the beloved husband of the late Maria Josephine (Vettese, 2009) and the loving father of Linda (Marc), Daniela (James) and Susan (Kent). He was a proud “Papa” to Alex, Andrew, Matthew and Isabelle. Jimmy was born in Gevgelija, Macedonia. Jimmy is survived by his dear sister, Danica Koehler (Guenter) and brother-in-law, Michael Vettese (Angela) and Antonio Vettese (Maria). Predeceased by his father Niko (1964), mother Mitra (1975), his sisters Efimija, Aleksandra, Slobodanka, Nada, and brothers Bosko and Atanasko. Dear brother-in-law of the late Francesca and Adelfino Pennesi. Dear uncle to Atanasko, Nikola, Zvonko, Manfred, Wolfgang, Nikola, Mira, Mario, Maria, John and families. Jimmy is survived by many relatives in Canada, USA, Macedonia, Germany and Italy. Known as “Miki”, he played professional soccer for Kozuf Gevgelija. Jimmy (#7) played striker, was fast and precise, and was able to control the ball flawlessly. He spoke often about his futbol career and was very proud. Jimmy served in the army and was stationed in Maribor, Slovenia for almost two years. His life then took him to the USA (Chicago) where he was able to continue his soccer career. Jimmy’s life path eventually took him to Canada where he finally settled in Windsor, met his wife and had three daughters whom he adored. Upon arriving in Windsor, he began his career at Chrysler Canada where he retired after 32 years of dedicated service. Jimmy was also a painter and worked very hard to provide for his family. Dad was loved by all due to his kind and lighthearted nature, sense of humour and charm. Always friendly and wanting to make people smile, he said hello to everyone. Jimmy had a loving heart, caring soul and was truly a peace keeper. It broke our hearts as his health declined over the years and to see him endure so much suffering. He fought a good fight and held on as long as he possibly could. Jimmy is finally at peace and completely restored. We miss you dearly dad…until we meet again! A private visitation and funeral service with immediate family only was held February 5, at Windsor Chapel (Banwell). As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of WindsorEssex County (2135 Richmond St.). Condolences and cherished memories may be shared with the family at www.windsorchapel.com Deepest gratitude to all the medical professionals, respite staff, family, friends and to all who cared for and supported dad through his time of need over the years. God bless you. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
