Obituary of Joseph George Patterson

PATTERSON, Joseph George, aged 79, died at home in Tecumseh, Ontario on February 11, 2022 with his beloved wife of 42 years, Pamela, by his side. Joe is mourned by his wife, Pam and his children, Jennifer and James and his grandchildren, Ethan, Noah, Claire and Natalie.  Also mourned by his two feline companions, Nip and Tuc. Joe will be missed by his sister, Vera-Lee; his nieces, Sheila (Lib) and Margo; his nephew, Graeme (Michelle) and their children. His loss will be felt by his many friends, near and far. Joe was a loving, generous, creative and clever man.  His successful career as a teacher and head of the English department was distinguished by his ingenuity and skill in presenting his subject and by his availability to his students. He made an impression on many of his students and would often be greeted by them in later years when he was out and about.  Joe was liked and admired by his colleagues and continued friendships from those days right until his passing. Outside his profession, Joe demonstrated his creativity in a number of ways.  First and foremost, he was a poet.  Through the years, as Joe wrote his poems, he also participated in writers’ groups, led creative writing and poetry workshops, undertook multimedia shows with visual artists and had his poems featured in several publications including books of his own work. Another creative outlet for Joe was home design, décor and renovation.  He sympathetically remodeled and decorated each of his homes and his vision and skill was appreciated by the family and friends that he would help with their projects. Joe loved to travel. He found inspiration for his poetry and his home projects in the various locations he visited.  He stayed with family and friends throughout Canada and the US. With Pam, he travelled to Australia a couple of times.  In later years, Pam and Joe enjoyed visiting the American Southwest.  Joe was very proud of the fact that, starting when he was a young boy, he had travelled to all 50 American states with his last being Hawaii in 2014.
