Obituary of Gabriel Fecko

FECKO, Gabriel Passed away peacefully on May 4, 2014 at Extendicare Southwood Lakes, Windsor, Ontario at the age of 75 years. Dear friend to Frank and Anna Varga, their son Ferko Jr., and Mrs. Anna Petkanic, who looked after "Gab" daily. Gabriel was born on September 21, 1938 in the city of Kosice, Slovakia, where he still has many close relatives in the area of Presov. A lifelong Bachelor, and trained Agronomist, Gab left for Austria first, and then to Canada, following an attack on Czechoslovakia by the Russians, on the night of August 20 - 21 of 1968. He was employed at National Auto Radiator for a number of years, until an injury caused from repetitive work forced his retirement.. He was a most humble man, and a compulsive walker - sometimes walking 20 - 30 km per day! A compassionate and loyal Canadian citizen, Gabriel was proud of his Slovak roots, especially his Christian heritage, that the brothers, "St.s Cyril & Methodius" brought to the lands of today's Slovakia, from Greece -1200 years ago. A regular "Snowbird", Gabriel would travel (always by bus), regularly to Mexico, and as far as Argentina, to spend some winter months. He would favor us with lengthy discussions about religion, politics and soccer! Special thanks to the staff at Extendicare Southwood Lakes, for assisting Gab in living out his senior years with dignity and compassion. At his request, a private service with cremation has taken place. His wish was that he could "be a teenager forever", and promised to let us know, "what it is like on the other side."
