Obituary of Bohdan Fedchun

FEDCHUN, Bohdan Passed away on June 2, 2010 in his 97th year. Bohdan is reunited with his beloved late wife Frances (nee Mazuren in 2001). He is survived by his children William (Mary) , Windsor; Gerald (Janet), Toronto; Lawrence (Jennifer), Calgary; Marilyn Thomas (Andrew), Qatar. Loving grandfather (DIDO) to Matthew (Leslie), LaSalle; Alexandra (Sasha), Calgary; Tamara Martin (Steve), Toronto; Andrew (Zdana), Toronto; Jennifer Jankowski (Anthony), Calgary; Natalie, Colleen, Bryan, and Alex Fedchun, Calgary; Paul Thomas, Rochester, N.Y.; Johnathon Thomas, Texas; Ryan, Toronto. Loving great-grandfather to Julia and Raya Martin and Maksym Fedchun, Toronto. Survived by his sister Martha Petruk, Windsor and sister-in-law Anne Fedchun, Winnipeg. Predeceased by sisters Yvonne Tymochko (2008), Windsor; Olena Hrabarchuk (2006) and Mike (2006), La Pas, MB; and brother Hretz (1998), Arran SK; brother-in-law Nick Petruk (1978). Proud Uncle of many nieces and nephews. Bohdan was born November 12, 1913 on the family farm in Arran, SK, homesteaded by his father and mother, Wasyl and Ephemia. He married Frances in 1941 and moved to Windsor. He worked at Dominion Forge as a Stationary Engineer until his retirement in 1982. All his life he served the Ukrainian community, beginning with the building of the Kobzar Church in Arran SK. in the 30's. He was president of the Eastern Branch of the Ukrainian Self Reliance League in the 50's, and active in St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Ukrainian Prosvita Association from the day he came to Windsor. He was founding member and treasurer of Taras Shevchenko Senior Citizens Apartments in Amherstburg. He was a passionate about promoting our Ukrainian Heritage and worked as a counselor in the Canadian Ukrainian Youth Association from the 50's to the 90's. He organized the seniors at Ukrainian Prosvita to prepare Ukrainian "dishes" that the community could enjoy. He participated in the Windsor Carrousel of Nations and was crowned "Carrousel King" in 1988. He was an active member and president of Zolota Zhoda Ukrainian Seniors. His hobby was "bee-keeping" which became a family affair. He was forced to retire when he was disabled by a stroke in 1998. He continued to live at home for 10 more years, then went into Long Term Care. Special thanks to the staff at Sunrise Senior Living and Malden Park Continuing Care. Visitation will take place at WINDSOR CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME, (MAIN CHAPEL) 1700 Tecumseh Rd. E. on Monday, June 7, 2010 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Panahyda Monday at 7:30 p.m. by Very Reverend Father Pawlo Berezniak. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. unitl time of prayers at 9:30 a.m. with procession from the Funeral Home then to St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral for Funeral Service at 10 a.m. Bohdan will be laid to rest in Kobzar Cemetey in Arran, Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral or to the St. Vladimir Institute.
