Obituary of Michaela Kameka

KAMEKA, Michaela Marie

Passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on September 27, 2024 in her home at the age of 20 years, after a life-long courageous battle with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type III B, also known as Sanfilippo syndrome. Beloved daughter of Ann (nee Morris) and Glenn Kameka (Sherry). Loved sister of Faith Kameka (Christian Mertick) and Aidan Kameka. Step-sister of Seth and Miranda Chow. Cherished granddaughter of Emmett and the late Margaret Kameka and Kathryn and the late Michael Morris. Michaela will also be lovingly remembered by her many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Michaela came into our world early and left too soon. After three and a half years of searching for answers, she was diagnosed at the tender age of four and entered into the ranks of being a Sanfilippo soldier; which she bravely fought until the very end. In spite of her challenges, Michaela thrived in her own way. She attended H.J Lassaline Catholic School in Windsor for JK and SK from 2008-2010. From there she moved on to and graduated from St. Pius X Catholic School in Tecumseh. Michaela continued her education and was welcomed into the STEPS program at Tecumseh Vista Academy from 2018 until her passing. Early in her life, Michaela was very busy playing with friends, running, singing, doing crafts, drawing and colouring. She enjoyed music and watching shows like Dora, Max and Ruby, Backyardigans, Toopy and Binoo, etc. Michaela was well loved by her peers. Anyone who met her was touched by her pure spirit and gentle soul. She reminded all of us that life is precious and meant to be enjoyed.

Michaela was a testament of strength, bravery and courage. She beat the odds and lived much longer than was expected with the support of Team Sanfilippo; without which it would not have been possible. They were Michaela’s worldwide extended family. Words cannot express how eternally grateful we are for their love, support, and guidance in navigating this difficult journey.

The family would also like to thank Dr. G. Butler of Tecumseh who was Michaela’s primary care physician throughout her life. Also thank you to Michaela’s chiropractors at Community Chiropractic - Dr. Sarah Dale and Dr. Todd Small and Dr. Ginette St. Pierre of Holistic Chiropractic and Wellness Centre. Thank you as well to all of Michaela’s teachers, E.A.’s and P.S.W.’s. The family would also like to recognize and thank Michaela’s medical team at Victoria Hospital in London, who journeyed with her in her last days and supported her transition back home. Lastly, a big Thank You to our entire community who always supported Hope for Michaela.
