Obituary of Marie Wilson
WILSON- Marie Isobel (Nee Pougnet)
An Inspirational Lady
After a short illness, Marie passed away peacefully on August 5, 2023, surrounded by her loving family, in her 99th year.
Cherished wife of the late William (Bill) Wilson (1994) and beloved mother of Mary Lynn Calcott and Karen Wilson Sidwell (John).
Marie took great joy in the special relationships she had with each of her grandchildren, the late Christopher Calcott (2019), Kate Sidwell and Julia Sidwell.
Loving and devoted daughter of the late Maurice V. Pougnet (1956) and the late Margaret Pougnet (2003).
Dear sister of the late Margaret (Bette) Sauve (2021) and the late Earl (Bud) Sauve (1986), Patricia (Pat) Boddy and the late Leigh Boddy (1986), and Maurice (Maurie) Pougnet and the late Ellen Pougnet (2015).
Marie will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
Marie’s passion for playing sports started at an early age and led to competing in the Ontario Secondary School Tennis Doubles Championships with her sister, Pat. She continued to play golf, badminton, and tennis for many years.
After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1946, Marie began her teaching career in Hamilton, Ontario. The next several years were filled with teaching French and Math in various high schools throughout southwestern Ontario, eventually arriving back in Windsor to establish her career at W.D. Lowe Secondary School in the Physical Education department. Here she enjoyed many years coaching girls’ basketball and volleyball teams. Always interested in contributing to the education of her students, Marie continued to teach on a substitute basis until her retirement.
Marie had a strong faith which guided her throughout her life. She was an active member of the CWL and devout parishioner of both St. Anne’s (Walkerville) and Guadalupe churches. Many life-long friendships were formed while playing bridge and socializing there.
Marie was fortunate to maintain her independence throughout her life, residing in the family home for nearly 80 years. She made it the gathering place for extended family, bringing everyone together for birthdays, holidays and special occasions.
Her sense of adventure led her to travel the world extensively. In her latter years, she spent many winters with loved ones in California and Florida. All who met her there were amazed by her vitality, knowledge and sense of fun.
Marie spent her final days at Hospice, where she and her family were lovingly cared for by the nurses and staff. As a tribute to Marie and if you so desire, the family requests donations to the Hospice of Windsor and Essex County. (6038 Empress Street, Windsor, ON).
